Help for a golf tournament fundraiser?
My school’s community service club will be running a golf tournament benefitting breast cancer. I would appreciate any ideas for rasing money. I know that getting sponsors is a big deal but what else could I have them do other than adopting a hole? Thanks for your input!!
I suggest a scramble format of 4 players to a team. Only one player can be a 10 handicap or less. Include a skins game where each team puts up $5 or $10 a person and when the score cards are turned in circle the winning skin(s) and choose your pay out percentage. 50% is a good number. The field size should also enter into this and other skills prizes. Sell mulligans for $5 each or 2 for $8, maximum 2 mulligans for any one player. Team captains mark the score card when mulligans are used. On all par threes enlist a volunteer marshall and have the superintendent draw a 20 foot diameter circle around the cup. Have another volunteer at the tee box and the skill shot is to hit your first tee shot (in case of OB) within the circle. Pay off is one to one with a $5 minimum bet. Examine the score card for the highest 4 handicap holes. Each team bets $5 and the closest in two shots wins. In case of two or more teams holing out splits the wagered amount. Be fore the tournament starts conduct a putting contest where participants bet $3 per ball or 4 balls for $10 and you split the pot 50%-50%. Be sure to have 50-50 drawings with tickets and maybe in your area you can sell tips. Ask the golf course management if you can operate the concession cart and sell water, soda and juice purchased from the local Sam’s or Costco. Raffle a full set of clubs or a set of lessons from the pro. They will give you a break on the clubs and be mindful there is a 40% markup from wholesale to full retail and lessons are the pro’s time. So one team with ringers is kept in check a minimum of four tee shots from each player must be used. Have the pro hit a tee shot for each team on the longest hole or on the first tee, a convenience for him or her. Get prizes as donations from local merchants and other service providers. Closest to the pin on all par threes, two longest drives with a string for accuracy, longest and closest to string. Shortest drive, longest putt on a selected hole. Get a digital camera and photo each team and take a shot of each player in their back swing or forward swing. Take a lap top with a good printer and quality photo paper and you can buy paper frames and offer them for your cost plus $5. If this is a more informal tournament be sure to feed the players before, during and after the round. You can make an 8 to the pound dog for 17 cents. Check with all local and regional hospitals for donations and tee prizes. Oncologists and outpatient clinics are another great place for tee shirts, caps, towels, and gold shirts. Check the cost of hole in one insurance and have the local car dealer help you and they can bring out the car and get free PR working with the Hole-in-one service providers. This hurts a bit. The Members of your service club sell services like car detailing, clean a room, cut the grass, babysitting or other things like that. It will save you money if you don’t get prizes for the skilled shot rewards. You can even do car washes at the facility with help from the superintendent. If you have 25 teams you should project a total of $5000 plus to benefit the breast cancer benefit recipients. Be sure to send a PR notice to your local newspaper with a donation pledge snail mail and e-mail address, preferably in co-operation with a bank. Get a web site up ASAP or link with the golf facility. Print flyers and post them at grocery stores, barber shops and salons. Make sure you contact every doctor in your area for donations and participation. Make a deal with the golf course owner and sell buy one get on free golf passes even though the owner will insist on restrictions for play.
