golf rules lost ball
Rules of golf: What happens when you hit a ball on an ant pile and declare to opponent you took unplayable lie?

match play. took one club length relief from ant pile where ball rested and declared to opponent I took unplayable lie and hit 2nd shot. When got on green opponent picked up my marker and said I lost hole because ball was not on ant pile. Doesn’t he incur a one stroke penalty for picking up my marker or is he conceding put in match play? Am I lying three for declaring it an unplayable lie?

Well apparently, you needed to take a penalty stroke on that hole. This is a ruling by the USGA. Fire ants would be a different situation. That said, your opponent was a complete ass – acting without discussing this with you shows no class at all.

33-8/22 Local Rule Treating Ant Hills as Ground Under Repair
Q. An ant hill is a loose impediment and may be removed, but there is no other relief without penalty. Some ant hills are conical in shape and hard, and removal is not possible, but relief under Rule 25-1b is not available since an ant is not a burrowing animal. If such ant hills interfere with the proper playing of the game, would a Local Rule providing relief be authorized?
A. Yes. A Local Rule stating that such ant hills are to be treated as ground under repair would be justified.
Such a Local Rule is also justified on courses where fire ants exist. A fire ants’ mound or hill is removable, but its removal will cause the fire ants to swarm out of the ground. When this occurs, anyone in the vicinity is in danger of being bitten by the ants, and the bite of a fire ant can cause serious illness.

golf etiquette rules
golf rules and etiquette when making the turn?

I was playing 18 holes the other day at a local course and when I made the turn from #9 to hole #10 there was three groups waiting to tee of off . I was told that the starter told these groups to start on the back nine because the front nine was busy. There was no ranger at the tee box to let us play thru . should I have told the other groups that I was making the turn and cut in front of them ? I didn’t want to start a fight on the tee box .

I can’t say for all courses, but the ones in my area are “those making the turn have first right to the tee”. They even have signs in between the 9th and 10th holes that say that. I’d check with the starter or pro- I think you got hosed… won’t do you any good now, but in the future things will be different.

golf rules made easy
What’s a good little book for learning about golf?

I’m not talking about “Golf for Dummies”, but something along those lines. Is there a good book that I could buy that gives all the rules of golf, tips on how to play, how to shop for clubs, stuff like that? Something really concise and easy-to-read; I’ve golfed a bunch of times before, but with borrowed clubs and all, and I’m not very good. I’m not looking for a magic book to make me suddenly pro, just something that’s easy to read that’d make me more informed, and perhaps interested.

harvey pennicks little red book. your libary will have it. used bookstore, if worse comes to worse. 14 dollars brand new. best book ever.
