golf handicaps?
can someone explain to me how these work? if someone has a 15 handicap, what does that mean?
Actually lestermount’s answer is what most people think. You can use that as a real basic answer but it is more complicated than that. Here are two explanations that are little more accurate for everyday use.
1. If a 15 handicap plays against a scratch golfer, he would need 15 strokes to make the match even. He would receive those strokes on the 15 lowest handicap (hardest) holes.
2. A fifteen handicap would be expected to shoot 15 over par on a course with a neutral slope rating. His expected score and course handicap would be calculated on each course using a formula based on the course slope rating. For the record, a scratch golfer’s expected score would differ based on the difficulty (course rating) of the course. As Tiger said yesterday, a good 10 handicap would not have been able to break 100 on today’s Open course.
If you are interested in more detail, you’d have be a golf freak like me. The USGA offers many publications and even seminars on the subject.

whats the best and most popular golfing software, managing leagues, handicaps, schedules, where do i get it…
downloadable if possible
Two sites that I like are http://www.egolfleagues.com and http://www.imagolfer.com .
I prefer using a website for my golf league because you don’t have to worry about upgrades and compatibility, plus it gives the golfers access to the schedule, leaderboard and stats.
The first one is basic, but it automatically creates your schedule, calculates handicaps, and is real simple to use.
The second one is much more detailed. It handles automatic scheduling of golfers for leagues with teams or without, automatically calculates points based on a variety of different formats (Stableford, Match Play, Best Ball) based on gross or net scores, and will even calculate skins automatically. It also has a setup wizard that steps you through setting up your league. Plus it offers the golfers more features such as allowing them to contact other golfers through the site, automatically request and schedule subs, and post messages on the message board.
One of the things I like best about imagolfer.com over egolfleagues.com is that it shows exactly which scores were used and how the handicap was calculated for any given golfer. I had many times where I was asked to verify the calculations by golfers that didn’t believe their handicap went up after a round, or mad that it went down. It was always right, but it was a pain to figure out manually. Now the golfers just click on their handicap and it shows the calculations and actual results for each step. This is especially helpful if your league uses the USGA formula because it gets a little confusing when you start using the lowest 10 out of the last 20 rounds, etc.

Entering my golf scores with/without handicap?
I understand the process of the handicap when playing others which mine is a 20. I know that I must enter every round I play to be fair. My question is when I enter my scores do I deduct my handicap from my total score and enter it. Or, do I enter my actual score. Example: Say I shoot an actual 94 but with my handicap it drops it down to a 76. Would I enter 76 in to the system?
The answer to your question is NO!
No one mentioned “course handicap”. That is the first thing you must figure out. There is a calculator on the ghin site. There is probably a chart at the pro shop or you can look on the terminal where your scores at the golf course. Or you can do it the old fashioned way.
Handicap index (example 19.5) mulitplied by the slope rating (example 122, found on score card) and divided by 113 <--- that number is constant. = 21.05 = course handicap of 21.
Then use equitable score control to adjust the score.
Course handicap ------------------- maxium score per hole
0-9 ---------- Double Bogey
10-19 ---------- 7
20-29 ---------- 8
30-39 ---------- 9
40 or more ---------- 10
So if your course handicap is 21 and you shot 95 with a quadruple bogey on one of the par 5's, you have to subtract a stroke and only take an 8 on the hole. The same with the other holes.
Then post your score.
Golfing Scoring & Tips : How to Calculate Golf Scores

I would like a very descriptive way explaing a golf handicap, what’s it for and what it does?
Please give a detailed description of
1. What a golf handicap is?
2 what the difference between a golf handicap and handicap INDEX?
3. What are the purposes of a golf handicap?
4. How might one use their newly found handicap to improve their golf game?
thanks,
wayne
Basically lets take a golf course that has a par of 70. If you play a few times and average about 94 then technically your handicap is 24. This is now your playing guide so if you score par on a hole you recieve points. Or if you go round next time in like 90 you have improved on your handicap however you have to keep it consistant before you can lower it.
A golf handicap is used to improve your game thus trying to lower it to scratch which is 0 par all around the golf course.
Trust me once you have a handicap and golf often it will improve your game.

Is the USGA handicap system fair to older golfer`s?
Course ratings are based on a “scratch” golfer and the course rating figures into the calculation of handicaps for all tees at a particular golf course.
The difference in tees at almost every course ever built is one of distance. When a course is rated the differential between tees does not make that much of difference for a scratch player and the ratings tend to show that there is only 1 or 2 strokes different between tees.
At the course where I and about 150 other senior`s play there is mass confusion on what our handicap really should be when we ; 1) play from longer tees in a tournament consisting of senior`s and non seniors who normally play the longer tees and 2) When our better playing senior`s,who normally play the longer tees, play the shorter tees during a “senior only tournament”.
In both cases the shorter hitting senior loses.
He only gaines 1 stroke for a +600 yard increase in total course distance in 1) above. In 2) above the better player only loses 1 stroke.
I don’t see what the problem is. With most handicapping systems in most sports (i.e. bowling, pool, etc) the best player still usually wins. And in golf, longer hitters usually win at every level, including the PGA Tour. If you feel the better players are winning too often, maybe you should suggest tournaments that separate players based on their handicap levels.
My guess is that the short hitting seniors probably have handicaps that are too low, but not because the system isn’t fair. The USGA’s calculations factor in which tees you’re playing from, but if the weakest part of their game is their overall distance, their handicap may (in theory) be too low. If they feel they’re not getting the appropriate advantage when playing from the short tees, they need to play from the back tees to get their handicap higher.
