What is appropriate golf attire?
I am a young professional and have a company sponsored golf outing at a master’s course in Texas. The course is supposed to be pretty nice, but I haven’t heard anything about a dress code.
What is the most casual thing I can wear without looking trashy (jean shorts vs. canvas shorts…collared shirt vs. solid ringer teeshirt)…? Also, I don’t have (nor can afford) golf shoes. Should I wear sandals or steve madden style tennis shoes?
The course is Bear Creek Golf World, and I live in the Woodlands. It is an Arnold Palmer owned course, but I wasn’t able to find an official dress code online.
Can anyone recommend the best stores to cheaply buy clothes?
Thanks to everyone whose answered so far…you’ve all been really helpful.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that if you’re asking about appropiate golf attire you either don’t play golf, or you very rarely go out and have no clue what you’re doing. Which is ok, btw, but I’d add a little to what you’re getting here in answers. As a former club pro I played host to hundreds of corporate outings (in AZ) and events and looking like you belong at the club is a good idea. If you’re trying to impress a boss or two (who most likely play a lot of golf) you’ll want to make sure you don’t stand out like a sore thumb.
Jeans or denim of any type are not allowed.
Do not wear cargo shorts. Golfers don’t, you shouldn’t either.
Dockers makes a nice selection of golf shorts as does Nike. Make sure they are comfortable and aren’t too short.
Wear a nice, clean, polo-shirt. Make sure the sleeves aren’t too short. It’s not a gun show.
Remember, golfers are CONSERVATIVE by nature, especially at the more prestigious clubs. Your attire should be too.
Tennis shoes would be fine but if you want to “fit in” head out and buy some golf shoes. Make sure they have soft spikes (non metal) and are clean.
Take with you the following:
A baseball style hat. Those big round floppy hats, or straw hats should be a no no for anyone on the up and up.
Sunscreen. And use it. You’ll be out there a long time.
Lip balm. The sun will punish your lips and you don’t want chapped lips at the next days meeting.
Plenty of golf balls. You can get a dozen of top flites for 20 bucks.
Tees.
And I’d caution you against drinking too much beer. I’ve seen plenty of guys get down right stupid during and after a company outing b/c they drank too much.
