Where would the PGA be today, if Tiger had been the “Barry Bonds” of golf, instead of the “Michael Jordan”?
If Tiger was not a media darling like MJ, but a pariah like Bonds, would the TV and sponsership money have poured in? Would thongs of crowds follow his every move? Could he have carried the PGA on talent alone?
Simply put, if Tiger was like Barry Bonds, the PGA wouldn’t stand for it and tell him to clean up his act or go home! PERIOD!
Golf is all about class and being a gentlemen’s (I don’t mean that literally, ladies) game. The players get fined for cussing on the course. In all the other sports every other word is the F bomb and they see it as no big deal. You also don’t see a golfer getting in a rules officials face or kicking sand on their shoes if they get a ruling they don’t like. There’s no yelling or screaming unless it’s for safety reasons.
Golf requires honesty and integrity. The players aren’t taking performance enhancing drug (i.e. steriods) because it’ll actually hinder their game. You also rarely every see professional golfers cheating ON PURPOSE. Sure they may break a rule inadvertenly and get DQ’d, but will happen when you don’t know the rules. And what other sport can you call in a rules infraction that you saw a player make from your living room (which in my opinion is BS!).
There are some golfers that are jerks at times and I’ve seen a couple have complete meltdowns. There is a lot of pressure on the players because if they don’t perform well, they don’t get paid. But there are far fewer than what’s in the NFL, NBA and MLB and even NASCAR. Too many egos in those sports.
