Why does my dog growl at random people?

We adopted a 1 to 3 year old unneutered male rat terrier/basenji mix from the shelter a week ago. He is very affectionate & will lay on his back for a scratch and play a lot. He has quickly learned sit & not to get on the bed or sofa. We took him hiking and climbing with us last weekend, and he growled/barked at almost everyone. While climbing, he ran up to a girl who he had already happily met and barked at her. We had to tie him to a tree. He sat there and barked at the guy next to us. Another girl approached and he barked/growled at her until she said hi. He licked her. She left and came back a minute later and he jumped/growled. He also growled at a kid in the park. We were about to take him back but instead took him to a golf course to socialize. He happily met 25 kids and licked them all, buying himself another week with us. We are afraid he won’t outgrow these tendencies with training and we don’t want to get too attached and live in fear. What do we do? Neutering is in 3 days.

I think it is time for you to teach your dog the word “enough”. It means it is ok to do this behavior UNTIL I say enough then you must stop. It works for me for postal workers, delivery persons etc. So that being said… practice it at home with the help of a family member then a friend. At the door is usually the worst place for this. So have your family member knock on the door and your dog should bark.. tell him “enough” if he doesn’t stop then touch him by the scruff of his neck.. (not hard.. but enough for him to feel it) and say enough again. When he stops barking tell him to sit then answer the door, if he gets up make him sit again.. and say enough again. DO NOT say his name as that should only be used when you are calling him to you. Repeat this with your family member knocking until he gets the message. Then try it with a friend (as it will be a different response). Repeat it as needed. If you can’t get a hold of the dog to touch his neck area (as with my chi’s they are pretty darn quick) then use a spray bottle and give him a quick zap with water with the word enough. Before too long he should get the meaning of “enough”. Use the word “enough” for anything that you allow for a little bit but want stopped when you want it to stop. Use the word NO for anything that you NEVER want him to do. They are smart enough to understand the difference. Anyway once he has this understanding you should be able to use it for your problem.
