Golf rules question “What do I lie?”?
I have hit the ball in a sand trap off the tee on a par 3. I hit my bunker shot. It hits the wall of the bunker, comes back, and catches my club on the follow through. The ball goes up in the air and strikes my shoulder as it falls back in the bunker. What do I lie? Do penaltys just keep stacking up or is there just one?
Lying 5, hitting 6.
There’s no penalty for double-striking the ball, you simply struck the ball twice and you have to count both strikes. However, you did incur a two stroke penalty for hitting yourself with your ball. You’re lying 5 and hitting 6.
Maybe some of you guys should re-explain this rule to Jeff Maggert where in the 2003 Masters he hit himself with his ball after his ball caught the lip of a fairway trap on the 3rd hole, ricocheted back and hit him in his chest and incurred a two stroke penalty.

golf betting game?
does anyone know the name of the game where you and a partner play against another group of two. You can get up to 6 points on a hole (with the option to play for double or triple)?
The scoring goes:
2points-low ball
2points-low total
1point-birdie
1point-closest to pin in regulation
Also, is the closest to the pin point awarded to closest in regulation or closest in fewest number of shots?
(i.e. on a par 5, golfer A is on the green in 2, golfer B is on in 3. after golfer A putts, he is still farther away than B after his third shot–who wins the point?)
That is the game of choice for betting. Most refer to it as just a Six Point Game. Your description of points was correct. The point for closest to the pin goes to closest to the pin in regulation. A common way to play is that if a team gets all six points (it’s called an “umbrella”) the score is doubled. For example low, total, birdie (must be a natural birdie) and prox (closest in reg) would be 6 for 12 points. Teams can “press” to level two (or three, or four, etc) and points would be multiplied by 2 (or 3 or 4). On level two, if you got low ball (2pts) and total (2pts) and your opponent got the prox (-1pt) you would receive 3 for 6pts as a result of the press. This game must always be played with handicaps. A friendly game will be a quarter a point or 50 cents a point with limited presses. Presses can only be made by the team that is down (cummulative). At the end of the round, both partners pay the total to the opponents (it is not split between partners).
The lowest handicap player should generally be paired with the highest handicap player when selecting teams since there is an advantage to be able to hit greens and make birdies in this game. However, it can be fun to rotate partners every six holes to essentially have three separate games and have everyone get to play together as partners.
Game variation: Called “Press / Re-press” – Same scoring as a Six Point Game. Team 1 players tee off and Team 2 has the option to “press” after the tee shots (to level 2). Team 2 players then tee off and Team 1 has the option to re-press (to level 3) only if team 2 had pressed them originally. These individual hole presses are removed after each hole. A team (if they are losing) can make a “field press” that would remain for the round and start future press-repress sessions at Level 2. The team that is winning (cummulative points) will always tee off first.
These are great games, enjoy!

Golf rules questions!?
1) if using a provisional ball and you find the first ball in bounds, then you continue to play with the first ball, correct? Are you given a penalty stroke for have played the provisional ball?
2) Once you have addressed the ball do you have to swing in that stance? Can you check your swing and step back or is that a penalty for stepping back?
3) What does it mean if a ball is “lifted”
Thanks!!
1) Mary was mostly right, except:
If you find your first ball in bounds, you are not allowed to play your provisional ball.
If you have a really bad lie, you can declare the first ball unplayable. But you then have to proceed with the unplayable lie rules. You cannot use your provisional ball.
2) You can change your stance after you have addressed the ball. There is no penalty for stepping back.
You may want to change clubs, or change the direction of your shot, or hit it left-handed. You have the right to change your mind.
In fact, you can even stop in the middle of your swing.
The only thing you need to be aware of is, if the ball moves after you address it, it’s a one stroke penalty.
Remember also the definition of “addressing” the ball. It’s when you take your stance AND ground your club. It’s not a bad idea to get into the habit of not grounding your club, or waiting until the very last second to do so. In a hazard, addressing the ball is when you take your stance.
One other thing to be aware of is slow play. Don’t take forever to make up your mind.
3) When you “lift” a ball to get relief from an obstruction (free drop) or a hazard (one stroke penalty) on any other situation, you have several options.
You don’t automatically have to go back to where you hit the last shot.
Note to Sam:
1) You only get 5 minutes to look for the ball. You can hit the provisional a second time. If the drive with the provisional ball didn’t go as far as the first drive, you can hit the provisional ball again before searching for the first one. If you find the first ball, the first ball is in play.
2) What you said is correct. One additional bit: If you hit the ball with a practice swing when you’re not on the tee, there is a one stroke penalty and you have to replace the ball.
3) Your answer is not correct. See Mary’s answer for the correct meaning of “lifted”.

Has anyone used the freecaddie golf gps software on the Samsung Omnia?
I am trying to select a course which i have transferred over to my phone, but i can’t open it with freecaddie. I have followed all instructions but nothing is working. Any suggestions?
I have used the free-caddie before, but I was really not happy at all with it. I think the sync technology is still a couple of years off…phone technology is just not there yet.
After I played with it and was frustrated for a few weeks, I just went out and got a Yardage Pro Golf GPS. It was not too expensive and it works flawlessly. I found them online for $200.

Golf Rules for playing partners in competition play?
Can anyone help me please.
I play at a golf course in Scotland and we have a member who never has a good score when playing with fellow competitors, however he has entered some competitions recently and his wife has played with him and marked his card.
Surprise surprise he always comes first or second. Our golf club committee have done nothing about this.
Are there any rules to govern this or does it have to be a local club rule??
His wife has played for a year and has only recently gained a handicap. Any help would be much appreciated.
Either your Golf Committee is asleep or is non – existent. In any club competition where partners are involved, the opponents scores are kept by the competitor, attested to by the opponent , signed and turned into the committee for recording. Similar results occur when friends play in partnerships. One couple usually won the gross prize while the other usually won the net. Wasn’t that outcome extraordinary ?

I need suggestions for free or relatively inexpensive software to organize my golf league?
If I wanted to start my own golf league consisting of amateur golfers, what kind of software is out there that will allow me to keep track of players in the league, round scores, handicaps, etc.? Thanks.
Golfsoftware.com i have been using this for about 8 years and is well worth the cost. The best part you can order their scorecards and print them out with handicap and strokes per hole. Also keeps track of subs, skins and set it up specific to points and handicap for your league.
