2010 VW Golf TDI cost?
Can anyone hazard an informed guess about how much the new Golf will cost? I only recently began to consider TDI. Do TDI cars usually cost more? Recommend?
VW doesn’t “give away” anything. I bought a new Golf TDI in 2000 (2001 model year) and the diesel premium was 9% over the standard engine model. The car cost me $15,700. With the 2010 Rabbit MSRP around 20,500, I’d expect they will be asking 24K or more. I like to share my opinion about a lot of things so hear me out on this one.
I still have my TDI and it’s still my daily driver. I do most of the fixing and scheduled maintenance myself so much of the cost of ownership of this jewel is in my own time. It now has just over 220,000 miles on it. I’m not sure the newer TDI’s have timing belts but belt changes in mine send me to my banker. Quick oil change joints do not stock the correct oil for a diesel and I never found one where all the screws were replace for the engine belly pan. So dealer visits are a necessity at times but again, these visits also send me to my banker.
VW is calling this engine their “clean diesel”. It has more displacement than my older one and it is equipped with a particulate filter. In addition it is designed to run solely on the ultra low sulphur diesel fuel. All of those conditions suck up some of the fuel mileage. And mileage is mostly why anyone would buy one to begin with. If my car got 45 mpg I’d throw it away in a heartbeat. Chevy Suburban drivers might be impressed with that mileage but I’m not. At my 54 mpg before ULS fuel was mandated, my car took me roughly 80,000 miles to pay for the diesel option. Diesel generally cost less than regular gasoline before ULS fuel was mandated, it’s not that way now. I’m not sure you’d ever recoup the premium on the 2010’s.
So now that I’ve voice off about all that, I do still like my car. I can drive from Knoxville, TN to Denver, CO and fill up only once in Missouri. I routinely drive 650 miles on a tank of fuel but on level road at reasonable speeds I can stretch it to 800 miles before a fill up. I was in Denver when the price of gas/diesel went through the roof a year ago and I put my car on CraigsList for $10,000 (KBB put the value around $5000). I had 30 replies to my ad but I changed my mind about selling so I just kept the car.
I’m neutral on the recommendation of buying a new VW diesel. There are so many great cars to choose from if you’re going to spend that kind of money. Good luck with your decision.

2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI in 2 door?
Plain and simple:
I know the 2010 golf TDI comes 4 door, but am not sure if it comes in 2 door. I live in Ontario, and can’t find a 3 door TDI on the website. Thanks.

U.S Women’s Open 2010 Volunteers?
I want to be a bearer at this event. On the Junior application it says you need some golf experience. I have only taken lessons, and it was only for a short time. What counts as experience?
