golf tips irons

my golf game is ok but im having a hard time getting under the ball when using irons.any tips?
i tend to hit on the top of the ball so it stays low and i cant get any distance.when i try to get under the ball i usually overcompensate and dig into the grass.this problem is adding 20 or more strokes to my game.i do pretty good with my long and short game its just trying to get under the ball without dragging the ground while using irons.I seem to do better with my izzo hybrids but not much better. Please HELP!!!!
Many, many amateurs have a problem with what you are. The basis of the problem is a fault in how you imagine the club working.
The proper way to hit an iron is to contact the ball first with the clubface, then start your divot past the ball. Your swing actually bottoms out an inch and a half or so past the ball with an iron. This means you are accelerating through impact, trapping the ball to make it shoot off the clubface, and creating backspin as well.
Here is a slow motion video of what I am talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20JNb4Ihxgs&feature=related
I think that this visualization should help you quite a bit. When you mentally think you need to “scoop” or “get under” the ball it causes many inconsistencies in how you hit the ball. I would also highly recommend getting lessons from a local PGA instructor, they will help your game much, much more than any piece of equipment and make the game much more enjoyable.
Hope this helps, and good luck!!
